How to Make Relocating for Work Easier

It's not ideal--but sometimes if you want to get that great new job--you may have to leave everything you know behind. Willing to relocate for work is not just a fluff question during an interview anymore. It used to be an indication of whether a person was flexible. Now when it's asked you may have to move if you want the job. But there are ways to make it easy for you and your family.

1. Talk it over with you family. Do not come home from a job offer and announce you all have to move. That could cause a riot. Talk it over with the family before you even start the job hunting process. Explain there may be a chance of relocation and get your family's input. You have an entire family to consider, not just yourself

   Ask about any incentives to relocate. Many companies offer more money to relocate. Some will also fast track you into a higher position.

   Inquire with your company about compensation for the move. Some will pay entirely. Some will not. Find out before you even say yes to the deal, since moving can be costly, and some companies charge thousands.

4. Are you moving out first to find a house and get settled or are you going to have the entire family move together? This could be a way to bond, but it could also be a hassle. Most people stagger the move with the wife and kids staying behind until the old house is sold or even until school ends. It's tough on a family, but it may also be best for them.
