How to Replace Pin-Type Windshield Wipers

Pin-type windshield wipers use a clip to secure the wiper blade to the wiper arm. The pin is what the arm "grabs" onto at the wiper blade and arm joint. Check and replace your wiper blades every six months. Normally, the rubber compound will last four to six months depending on the frequency of use and driving conditions. Higher-quality silicone blades may last longer, up to a year. When replacing windshield wiper blades, take the old blade to an auto parts store and get the same size replacement blade.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the wiper arm away from the windshield until the wiper arm joint locks in a vertical position.

    • 2

Swing the wiper blade so it is perpendicular to the wiper arm.

    • 3

Push down or pull up on the release tab (depending on your vehicle), holding the wiper blade to the wiper arm.

    • 4

Pull the wiper blade pin out of the wiper arm. Normally, this means pulling down on the wiper blade to separate the pin from the arm.

    • 5

Install the new wiper blade. You only need to push the pin into the wiper blade hook until the pin snaps into place. When it snaps, it is locked securely to the wiper arm. Then, fold the wiper arm down to the windshield.
