Xenyx is an audio mixer manufactured by Behringer, a German electronics company. Musicians and audio-mixing engineers can connect a Xenyx to a laptop to store digital copies, edit recordings or create looping effects and musical overdubs in the laptop. Connecting the Xenyx to a laptop takes less than a minute using the interface that comes with the audio mixer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Xenyx
  • 2 RCA audio cables
  • USB/RCA interface
  1. Step 1

    Power down the laptop.

  2. Step 2

Using the USB/RCA interface, connect one pair of RCA plugs into the right and left audio inputs of the interface, then connect the other ends to the audio output jacks on top of the Xenyx mixer. These output jacks are near the back of the mixer control panel. For all connections, plug the red cable into the right-channel jack and the white cable into the left-channel jack.

  3. Step 3

Plug the second set of RCA cables into the output jacks of the USB/RCA interface, then connect the RCA plugs on the other end of the cable to the Xenyx mixer's audio input jacks.

  4. Step 4

Connect the USB plug on the other end of the RCA/USB interface to a free USB port on the laptop.

  5. Step 5

Power up the computer and the Xenyx mixer, then wait for the "New hardware detected" message to appear onscreen. Top-of-the-line Xenyx mixers have a rocker-type power switch on top of the control panel on the right-hand side. Entry-level Xenyx mixers activate when they are simply plugged into an electrical outlet.

  6. Step 6

Close the message box for "New hardware detected."

  7. Step 7

Open an Internet browser on the laptop and go to the Behringer website (see Resources section) to download any drivers (special software to manage the operation of a specific piece of hardware) you may need for your laptop. The download is free and takes only a few minutes.

  8. Step 8

From the Behringer main page, click on the gray button labeled "Support" at the top of the screen, and choose the driver downloads for your Xenyx model and computer operating system. For example, you might need the drivers for the Xenyx BCD2000 mixer for use on a laptop running Windows XP.

  9. Step 9

Follow the onscreen prompts when asked if you wish to download and install the software on your computer.

  10. Step 10

Reboot the laptop when the download is complete. You are now ready to begin audio mixing with the Xenyx and transferring audio data to and from the laptop.

Tips & Warnings
  • Behringer offers free downloads of audio software for different laptop models to interact with Xenyx mixers.
