1
Gather your materials. Collect leftover strips of fabric from different projects you are working on. Create more strips by cutting up pieces of old fabric that you're no longer planning to use.
-
2
Organize the strips. You can save the strips in batches by color if you want your rug to match a particular décor. Or you can just save all your strips together for a multicolored rag rug.

3
Trim all the strips to 1 1/2 to 2 inches wide.
-
4
Fold the strip in half so the right side of the fabric shows. Use the crochet hook to make four chain stitches. Join the ends with a slip stitch to form a round.
-
5
Keep enlarging the circle with single crochet stitches. End each round with a chain stitch to connect the previous round and the next round.
-
6
Keep working around the circle until the rag rug is the desired size. Weave a tail of loose fabric through the stitches. Hand stitch the tail of the fabric on the underside of the rug to secure the end.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure to use the same type of fabric for the whole rug. Do not mix lightweight cottons with wools. Join one strip of fabric to the next by cutting a 1-inch lengthwise slit in both ends of the strip. With the right sides of the strips facing up, place the end of the new strip over the end of the previous strip. Match up the slits. Pull the opposite end of the new strip through both slits from the bottom to the top. Pull the new strip firmly to secure. You can also use strips to make a braided rug. Lay three strips right side up, on top of each other. Tie a knot in one end. Braid the strips together. Add length to the strips by following the preceding tip.
