How to Fix Scratched Wood Floors

Regardless of how nice and new looking you want to keep your wood floors, they are going to get scratched. The best way to take care of scratched wood floors is to tackle the marks as soon as possible. Scratches can get worse over time. Protect your wood floors by removing your shoes when in the home and by placing a protective pad under your furniture when it needs to be moved.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Duster
  • Mop
  • Bucket
  • Wood floor cleaner
  • Stain marker
  • Fine grit sand paper
  • Mineral spirits
  • Wash cloth
  • Floor Wax

    Instructions for Small Scratches

  1. Step 1

    Dust the scratched area.

  2. Step 2

    Mix wood floor cleaner according to directions and mop the entire floor.

  3. Step 3

    Allow the floor to completely dry.

  4. Step 4

    Color in the scratches with your stain marker. You may need to mix two colors to get the right shade. Allow to dry. The scratches should no longer be visible.

  5. Instructions for Larger Scratches

  6. Step 1

    Dust away any dirt and debris from the scratched area.

  7. Step 2

    Rough the area of the scratch with a piece of fine grit sand paper. Use gentle pressure and always work with the grain of the wood.

  8. Step 3

    Apply a liberal amount of mineral spirits to your wash cloth.

  9. Step 4

    Apply the mineral spirits in a circular motion to the scratched area of the wood.

  10. Step 5

    Apply wax to the area that was scratched.

  11. Step 6

    Buff off the wax. You floor should now be scratch free.
