How to Repair DSL Connection Problems
DSL is a fast broadband network connection that includes fast data rates ranging from 2 Mbps and up. It is efficient for browsing the Internet and downloading files and programs at fast speeds. It occasionally runs into connection errors and problems that prevent you from accessing the Internet or connecting to email servers (e.g., Outlook Express). These connection problems are caused by many different factors but can be solved using a variety of troubleshooting steps and guidelines.

1
Check your phone and Ethernet cable and make sure that they are properly connected. Check any filters and make sure that they are firmly connected.
-
2
Double-check your setup. This may vary depending on your Internet Service Provider (ISP); therefore, refer to your operating manual to check the setup. If your setup is fine, move to the next step to power recycle everything.

3
Disconnect the DSL modem power cable from AC power. Let the modem stay off for at least 30 seconds and turn it back on.
-
4
Check the LED lights on the modem and make sure that the Internet, PC link and Cable link lights are lit. Depending on your service provider, you may have to refer to your manual to see which LED lights should be flashing and which ones should be still.
-
5
Try opening your web browser to determine if there is connectivity. If your web browser displays a familiar page, continue with normal use. If it does not, try restarting your computer to reestablish connectivity with your computer.
-
6
Check your firewall settings if there still is no connectivity. A third-party firewall can block network connections. If you have any security programs, check the firewall settings.
-
7
Press the "Reset" button on the DSL modem to reset it if you are still having connectivity problems. The location of the reset button will vary depending on your DSL modem, but it is generally located on the back.

8
Contact your ISP if you are still running into connection problems. There may be problems with your service or with the network in the area.
