How to Fix a Cadillac Seville's Trunk Lid-Pull Mechanism

The reasoning behind Cadillac Seville's trunk lid-pull mechanism is to help provide the proper sealing for a trunk. Because of the width of the trunk lid, the lid can bend or twist easily if forced. It is also difficult to seal this much area, so the automatic pull down was devised to exert the proper amount of pressure to seal the trunk lid against the rubber seal creating an air tight seal.

Things You'll Need

  • Volt meter
  • Set of ¼-inch drive sockets
  • ¼-inch drive ratchet

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the trunk lid down slowly and press lightly to latch the trunk lid latch to the lower pull-down. If it does not latch, the latch mechanism on the trunk lid is at fault. If it does latch, listen for the pull down to try to operate. If the pull-down mechanism makes noise to signify it is attempting to pull the trunk lid down, then the pull-down is bad. If no noise is heard and the motor is not responding, the switch on the trunk is bad.

Remove the top cover and push the carpet back to expose the pull-down motor. Check the electrical connector for power with the voltmeter. If there is no power, check the fuse. If there is power and the motor makes noise, replace the motor assembly. If there is power and the motor does not operate, go to the next step.

Check the switch (located on the trunk lid) that contacts the pull-down mechanism for power. If there is no power, the wiring is "open" between the body and the trunk lid. Look for the problem in the wiring and repair the wires. If there is power, the switch is bad.

Replace either the pull-down motor or the trunk actuating switch in the same manner. Use the ¼-inch drive ratchet and a socket and remove the screws that are easily seen holding the unit to the vehicle body. Unplug the electrical connector and the unit. Replace in the reverse order of removal.

I just replaced the pull down motor and of course it didn't fix the problem. So i'm guess there is something wrong with the wires or connection? I know nothing about cars, can anyone give me some guidance as how to check that power is getting to the motor?

it would be great if I got a reply to this. I'm hoping. I have ran through the system as you directed above and have discovered that I DO NOT have power to the upper switch. What I have discovered below is power at the orange wire and power at the green wire. The orange wire goes to the trunk lid light and I have yet to discover where the green wire goes but it's not green at the upper switch. Which wire should I be tracking down? I'm getting frustrated over something this small.... The car has been sitting for over a year. The trunk lid was not pulled down two days ago and today it was. Now it won't repeat so I'm getting frustrated chasing phantoms. Any and all help would be appreciated.
