How to Make Lavender Lotion at Home
Homemade lotions are easy to make and cost less per ounce than most store-bought versions. The benefit of making homemade lotions is that it can be infused with virtually any scent. Making homemade lotions can also be an inexpensive way to give gifts or even begin a small home business. The scent of lavender is believed to be calming and can easily be incorporated into a homemade lotion. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 3/4 cup almond oil
- 1/3 cup of jojoba oil
- 1 tsp. lanolin
- 1/2 oz. grated beeswax
- 2/3 cup rosewater
- 1/3 cup aloe vera gel
- 2 drops lavender oil
- 1 evening primrose oil capsule
- Double boiler
- Glass or stainless steel bowl
- Silicone spoon
- Mason jar or plastic container with lid

On low heat, combine the almond oil, jojoba oil, lanolin and beeswax in a double boiler. Allow them to melt together and stir with a silicone spoon to combine.

When the mixture has completely melted, set it to the side and allow it to cool until it can be handled.

Mix the rosewater, aloe vera gel, lavender oil and the inner contents of the evening primrose oil caplet in a glass or stainless steel bowl.

Add the cooled almond, jojoba, lanolin and beeswax mixture to the bowl and blend well. It should have the consistency of pudding or sour cream.

Once it is completely mixed, store in a jar with a tight lid.

Tips & Warnings
If a double boiler is not available, fill one pot with water and set another on top of it to create a homemade version. It might be necessary to use a stick blender or food processor in order to blend completely. Alternate scents can be created by varying the essential oils used. Lavender water can be substituted for the rose water. Coconut oil, olive oil or wheat germ oil can be substituted for the jojoba oil. The aloe vera gel can be substituted with honey.
If substituting with olive oil, the lotion is good for about 6 months and must be refrigerated.
