How To Make a Cardboard Bike

Using cardboard to create crafts can help occupy children indoors when going outside is not an option. Creating a cardboard bike from only a few materials provides fun and lots of imaginative possibilities. The process only takes a few minutes but the fun can last a long time.

Things You'll Need

  • Cardboard
  • Permanent marker
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick (non-toxic)
  • Rip or use scissors to cut one of the long flaps off a cardboard box. Place the piece (see image) on a hard, flat surface such as a table or work bench.

  • Draw two circles of the same size onto this piece of cardboard. Below these two circles, draw a rectangle about an inch wide and about three inches long (see image).

  • Cut these three shapes out and place them on the table or work bench.

  • Draw a handlebar shape (looks like the letter Y) and a bicycle-seat shape onto the cardboard (see image).

  • Cut these shapes out and place them with the other shapes.

  • Slightly bend the ends of the rectangle strip (see image).

  • Cut a small slit in both circle shapes (see image).

  • Slide the bent edges of the strips into the slits on the two circle shapes. These will be the wheels of the bicycle and the strip will be the frame (see image).

  • Glue the handlebars to one end of the bicycle frame. If needed, slightly bend the bottom and then press it onto the frame. Do the same with the seat of the bike (see image).

  • Stand the bicycle upright (view the image to see the final result). If the bike does not stand on its own, create a kickstand with a thin piece of cardboard and glue it to one end of the frame. Allow the project to dry overnight.

  • Decorate with markers, paint or crayons if desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adult supervision is advised when children are using glue or scissors.
