A great costume for any child, from toddler through age 5 or 6...no sewing required!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • pair of white shorts (can be used) that fit your child
  • white tee shirt (polos work best)
  • black felt sheets (2)
  • white painters cap (cheap at Michael's or paint stores)
  • dog collar (a real one that fits your kid
  • fabric glue
  • black fabric paint
  1. Step 1

Make sure shorts and polo shirt fit your child loosely. Line each piece with cardboard so that black fabric paint doesn't leak through. Use a foam brush or regular paint brush to make random spots on both pieces. They should be oval shapes, about 1" around. Random is best.

  2. Step 2

Use same black paint to make dots on the hat. Set aside to dry completely.

  3. Step 3

Cut out two long puppy ear shapes out of the black felt. Glue on the inside of the hat with fabric glue, trying on your kid to make sure the ear placement looks right.

Cut another shape of a tail out of felt, then use it to trace and create a second tail shape. Glue the two together to have weight. Put shorts on your child and locate the area the tail should appear.

  4. Step 4

From the inside of the shorts, use a seam ripper to open the seam on the shorts where the tail should go. Insert tail and do a few stitches or secure glue (let dry completely!) through it and through the short seam to attach the tail.

  5. Step 5

If you have old white shoes or can find cheap white shoes, you can do the same process to make them spotted. I even did the same to white socks.

  6. Step 6

On party day, dress your child in the outfit and add a red dog collar, loosely!!!! around your child's neck. Use safe black eye pencil or eye liner to darken the child's nose, and add whiskers if you wish.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use old clothes if possible rather than purchase new.
  • I made this for a party and it was a big hit, especially in that it is easy to make and fast. Kids love their tail!
  • Keep an eye to make sure dog collar is loose and if they are going to play on toys or a playground remove the collar.
