How to Replace an Alternator on a 2003 Ford Mustang

The 2003 Ford Mustang alternator is a 110-amp serpentine belt-driven unit. It has two mounting holes with 180 degrees of separation. It uses one master battery wire and an electrical connector for the field and alternator light. At 110 amps, it has sufficient power to drive all accessories and still maintain 14.5 volt charge rate. Having an alternator with this much amperage allows it to run cooler by keeping its duty cycle low. Alternators have the ability to flash for a short period to their maximum output, although they are only designed to operate at an average of 40 percent of maximum capacity for any lengthy period without heating up.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Set of wrenches
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • Set of 3/8-inch drive sockets
  1. Step 1

Disconnect the negative cable on the battery using a wrench. Loosen the accessory belt by using a wrench to pull the tensioner away from the belt to relieve the tension. Remove the belt from the alternator and leave the belt on the remaining pulleys.

  2. Step 2

Remove the main battery wire from the upright post that is marked "B+." Remove the electrical plug in the back of the alternator used for the field and light. Just pull it out of the socket.

  3. Step 3

Remove the two bolts holding the alternator to the engine-mounting bracket. One bolt is at 12 o'clock and the other at 6 o'clock. Remove the alternator.

  4. Step 4

Install in reverse order of removal.
