How to Install a Replacement Screen in an Aluminum Door or Window
A window screen is a metal wire, fiberglass or other synthetic fiber mesh, stretched in a usually metal frame, that covers a window. Its primary purpose is to keep insects, leaves, birds and other animals from entering a building or a screened structure such as a porch, while allowing fresh air flow. From time to time, screens will develop holes or pulls that will necessitate replacement. This is a simple repair job that any homeowner should feel confident in attempting. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Strip out the old spline, which is the tube-shaped material holding the existing screen in place in a small channel. Once the spline is removed, the old screen will pull out easily.
-
2
Measure the screen size and add 2 inches to both the width and depth. Cut the replacement screen. Lay the new screen across the opening, making sure you have a couple inches of excess on all sides.

Insert the end of the spline into the channel at the top left of the screen. Place the spline tool on top of the spline and work it into the channel across the top of the screen. You will have to stretch the screen as you go to make sure it is taut. When you reach the top right corner, manually push the spline around the channel and work down the right side, continuing to hold the screen taut. Continue working around the frame until you reach the starting point. Cut the spline when you reach the end.

Cut off the excess screen carefully with a utility knife.
