Storm doors are a great addition to any exterior door. You can open a storm door to let fresh air in the house. While closed, a storm door aids in preventing drafts from coming into the house. If your storm door is worn out or you want to have a new look, you may want to replace your storm door.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • Cordless screwdriver
  • Helper
  • Carpenter's square
  • Level
  • Drill
  • Drill bits
  • Caulking gun
  • Caulk
  1. Step 1

Measure the current storm door. Look at your flange while measuring. You want your replacement door to have the same width flange.

  2. Step 2

Remove the old storm door by disconnecting the automatic closer at the bottom and the retaining chain at the top. With a cordless screwdriver, unscrew the storm door frame from the house and gently remove it. Take all the old hardware off the door jamb as well.

  3. Step 3

Place the new storm door in the opening and dry fit it into position. Using a carpenter's square, make sure the corners at the top are square. Have a helper hold the door in place while you check to make sure it is level at the top with a 4-foot level.

  4. Step 4

With your cordless screwdriver, attach a screw at each jamb corner and a screw at each header corner. Recheck that the door is still level.

  5. Step 5

With the door square in the opening, screw in the remaining jamb installation screws.

  6. Step 6

Using the stencil provided with your new door, drill the holes for your door latch using the correct size drill bits. Attach the jamb latch and the door latch with the screws provided.

  7. Step 7

Attach your door closer to your jamb by attaching the bracket with four wood screws and put the closer in the bracket with the pin. With the door fully closed, pull the plunger on the door until you can hook it to the door.

  8. Step 8

With the caulk and caulking gun, apply a bead between the house and the door flange on the outside.
