How to Install Cooling Misters
Long a feature of restaurant patios, mister systems lower body temperature through evaporative cooling. Cooling mister systems range from pre-assembled do-it-yourself kits to commercial-grade assemblies that consist of several components. Whether a small kit or professional assembly, most systems offer connectivity to the average garden hose and fasten with staples or brackets to such outdoor framing as patio covers. When sizing your system, remember that a little goes a long way. Too many misters push your system from a cooling spray to a drenching soak. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Pre-assembled mister kit
- Tubing staples
- Hammer
- Professional rigid tube misting kit
- Wrenches
- Pipe clamps
- Screws
- Power drill and driver bit
Instructions

Pre-Assembled Systems
-
1
Press the mister tubing's female hose fitting against a garden hose's male end or a hose bibb. Twist mister's fitting clockwise to engage the threads. Turn the fitting clockwise until hand tight.
-
2
Unravel the mister tubing. Press the tubing against the wall or patio framing. Lay a tubing or cable staple over the tubing. Press the staple flush against the framing's surface. Strike the staple's nail to secure the staple and tubing to the framing.

3
Unravel the tubing across the outdoor space. Support the tubing with staples every 12 to 18 inches. As you unravel and secure the tubing, twist the tubing to ensure that the mister heads face away from the wall or framing.
-
4
Turn the hose or hose bibb to the "on" position. Check the mister heads and twist the heads clockwise to reduce mist flow or counterclockwise to increase mist flow.
Rigid Tube Misters
-
5
Insert the plastic supply tube into the rigid mister system's filter or hose bibb adapter. Twist the filter or adapter's compression nut clockwise until hand tight. Fully tighten the nut with a wrench to secure the tube into the fitting.
-
6
Hold the plastic supply line and filter or adapter against the patio framing or wall. Place a tubing staple or clamp around the supply line. Hammer the staple's nail to secure the line to the framing. Alternatively, use a power drill to fasten screws through the pipe clamp. Apply at least two staples or clamps or one every 12 to 18 inches.
-
7
Slip the misting system's compression elbow over the open end of the supply tubing. Turn the elbow's compression nut until hand tight and finish tightening with a wrench.
-
8
Cut the pre-assembled rigid tube misting line to length with a pipe cutter. Insert one end of the tube into the open end of the elbow. Twist the tube to ensure that misting nozzles face away from the structure's framing or wall. Tighten the elbow's nut. Secure the tube to the framing every 12 to 18 inches with staples or clamps.
-
9
Cut additional lengths of rigid misting tube with a pipe cutter and connect adjacent tubes with compression coupling fittings. Secure tubes with staples or clamps and cap the end of the misting line with a compression fitting plug. Attach a garden hose to the system's filter or adapter, turn on the hose and adjust the misters' flow rates.

Tips & Warnings
Tubing staples and clamps are available in the plumbing and electrical departments of most hardware stores. Standard coaxial cable clamps often fit over misting tube.
