Before Blu-ray became the format of choice, there were two high-definition formats on the market. Initially, HD DVDs competed with Blu-ray as an emerging format but disappeared from the marketplace when Blu-ray became the format chosen by all of the major movie studios. If you got on board with the HD DVD format, you may have a collection of HD DVDs sitting at home that you can't use on the newest Blu-ray players. It's a convoluted process, but it is possible to convert those HD DVDs into Blu-ray discs.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • HD DVD drive Nero software EVO demux H264Info eac3to tsMuxeR TsRemux Blu-ray DVD burner

    Rip the HD DVD

  1. Step 1

Download DVDFab HD Decrypter. This program will rip the video from the disc regardless of any copy protections put into place. Follow the instructions to load DVDFab HD Decrypter to your computer.

  2. Step 2

Insert the HD DVD you into the HD drive. DVDFab will automatically recognize the disc and the movie title will appear next to "Source" on the DVDFab screen.

  3. Step 3

Click on the three dots next to "Target." This will open a window so you can select a destination folder in which to save your video.

  4. Step 4

Press the "Start" button. The progress of ripping is monitored in the scroll bar at the bottom of the screen. When ripping is complete, you will receive a pop-up message.

  5. Convert the HD DVD to Blu-Ray

  6. Step 1

Download and install EVO demux, H264Info, eac3to, tsMuxeR and TsRemux. HD DVD technology differs so widely from Blu-ray that you will need all of these programs in order to convert one format to the other.

  7. Step 2

Run EVO demux. This free software will break the HD DVD EVO into individual files. Click the "Demux" button. You will receive a message when demux is complete. You will now have two files created by EVO demux, one audio and one video. Rename your audio file "movieaudio.ddp".

  8. Step 3

Upload the video file created in EVO demux into H264Info. Click on the three dots next to "Input File" and find the file. Check the boxes next to "HD -> BR Keep FPS" and "Write PPS every picture" and click "OK". Click on "Start" to run your video file through the program.

  9. Step 4

Go into the "eac3to" system. To get to "eac3to" you will go through the command line of your computer. Click on the "Start" menu and type "cmd" in the search box. At the prompt, type "cd\" and then the path of the folder. If you saved "eac3to" under "Program Files" for instance, you would type "cd\program files\eac3to" and press "Enter". This will take you into the "eac3to" folder and give you a new prompt. Type "eac3to c:\folder" where you have saved the audio file\movieaudio.ddp, "c:\folder" where you have saved the audio file\movieaudio.wavs from Nero. Press "Enter" to process. This will create several new audio .wav files in the folder where you have your HD DVD audio and video saved.

  10. Step 5

Convert the video and audio files into Blu-ray through tsMuxeR. Click "Add" and upload all of the video and audio files. Choose "Blu-ray disk" as the "Output" type and click "Start mixing." This will blend the altered video and audio back together. When the program is done blending, you will have one master file. Open TsRemux, add the file you just created as the "Source File," and click the "Remux" button. When TsRemux has finished processing, the file created will be a Blu-ray video file compatible with Blu-ray disc players.
