  1. Fix an Upright Kirby Vacuum

      Unplug the Kirby vacuum cleaner and lay it on its back so you can see underneath it.

      Find the beater bar, the round bristled brush that pulls dirt from the carpet.

      Slide the clips off each end of the beater bars. Slide off the drive belt if it is wrapped around the beater bar. The drive belt is the rubber belt that turns the Kirby vacuum.

      Cut any debris or hair wrapped around the beater bar with a pair of scissors. Buy a new beater bar if it is broken.

      Remove the drive belt and check for cracks or breaks. Buy a new drive belt if yours is broken or cracked. Pay attention to how the drive belt is wrapped around the inside of the vacuum.

      Wrap the new drive belt around the inside of the vacuum slide it over the beater bar. Slide the beater bar back into place and test the Kirby vacuum.
