How to Troubleshoot a Roomba Vacuum Cleaner

Your Roomba vacuum cleaner will tell you when there is a problem with your machine by making a two-tone "uh-oh" sound followed by beeping noises. This can be caused by a variety of issues, such as a stuck wheel, the main brushes cannot turn or the cliff sensors have been blocked.

How to Troubleshoot a Roomba Vacuum Cleaner

  • If you find that the problem you are experiencing with your Roomba is that a wheel is stuck or it not touching the ground, pick up the robot. Then, place it down securely on the floor and touch the clean button to restart the cycle.

  • If the main brushes cannot turn on your Roomba, turn over the robot and remove the brush guard. This can be done by pushing the two yellow tabs. Remove the brushes and clear any obstructions. Once you have done this, replace the brushes and the brush guard.

  • If you find that the side brush on your Roomba cannot turn, turn the robot over. See if you can find anything wrapped around the side brush. You can remove the side brush with a screwdriver and check for hair or a string that may have gotten wrapped around it.

  • If a wheel motor cannot run, the robot may be stuck. There is also a chance that something is wrapped around the robot's wheels. Check to see if you see anything that may have gotten tangled in a wheel. Push the wheels in and out to make sure they turn easily.

  • If your Roomba's cliff sensors have failed or are blocked, turn over the robot and clear any debris that might be stuck underneath the front bumper of the cliff sensors. Using compressed air to clean out the sensors is also recommended.

  • If your Roomba is stuck, pick up the robot and start it again somewhere else in the room. Make sure to either use a virtual wall or some other sort of barrier to keep the robot from getting stuck again at the same spot.
