How to Knit Wool Gloves

Wool is the ideal fiber for gloves. It is warm, breathable and water resistant. While synthetic gloves can leave your hands damp and sweaty, wool will keep your skin healthy through the cold winter months. With only minimal changes, you can adapt a glove pattern to light or heavy weight wool yarns. Keep the same stitch count but change yarn and needle size to make a smaller or larger glove.

Things You'll Need

  • Two size 5 circular needles or four or five double pointed size 5 needles for a women's large. Size 4 needles for a women's small. Worsted weight wool yarn. Stitch markers Yarn needle

Instructions

    • 1

Cast on 36 stitches (add in multiples of 4 for a larger size glove). Join to work in the round, placing a marker to note the start of round. Knit round one, purl round two. Repeat once for a total of four rows to start your wool gloves.

    • 2

Work 3 rows in a k2, p2 rib and then purl one row to create a waffle stitch pattern (see References 1). This four row pattern should be repeated until your glove cuff is the desired length, typically from 2.5 to 4 inches as you prefer.

    • 3

Knit one round. On the next round, knit until one stitch is remaining. Place a marker and make one stitch, knit one stitch and make one stitch. Knit the next row even. Continue working one increase round, making one after the first marker and before the last and one plain round until you have 13 stitches between your markers. Place these 13 stitches onto waste yarn.

    • 4

Cast on one stitch and knit 5 rounds even. Knit 16 stitches and place 8 stitches on waste yarn for the pinky finger. Cast on two stitches and knit to the end of the round. On the following round, knit six stitches and place the next 22 stitches on waste yarn. Cast on 2 stitches and knit the six stitches remaining on the back of the hand. Knit in the round until the index finger reaches the fingertip. Knit two together around the following 2 rounds. Break the yarn and run through the remaining stitches. Weave in the end.

    • 5

Re-attach the yarn and pick up two stitches along the cast of stitches for the index finger. Knit 6 stitches from the palm of the hand, cast on two stitches and knit 6 from the back of the hand. Working in the round, knit until the middle finger reaches the fingertip. Knit two together on two rounds and run the end of the yarn through the remaining stitches, pulling tight.

    • 6

Pick up two stitches along the middle finger cast on. Knit 5 stitches from the palm of the hand, cast on two stitches and knit 5 stitches along the back of the hand. Knit until you reach the end of the finger and knit 2 together around for two rounds. Finish as for the other fingers on your knit glove.

    • 7

Move the yarn for the last finger onto needles. Attach yarn and pick up two stitches along the cast on stitches from the last finger. Knit the held stitches and continue working in the round to the end of the finger. Decrease and pull the yarn through the remaining stitches.

    • 8

Place the thumb stitches onto the needles. Attach the yarn and pick up two stitches next to the index finger. Join and work in the round until you reach the end of the thumb. Decrease over two rounds and finish the thumb as you did each finger.

    • 9

Repeat for the second wool glove. Weave in all ends on your knit gloves.
