How to Replace Car Struts

Replacing car struts is an arduous task. The working environment should always be free of hazard, especially when it involves a vehicle.       Loosen the cover plate retaining nuts. Elevate the vehicle to the appropriate height. Properly support the vehicle while raised. Take off the tire and wheel assembly. Remove brake calipers without detaching the brake hose. Take off the brake rotor, as well as the wheel bearing.

      Detach the sway bar end link from the strut. You may need a 2-jaw puller to detach the tie rod from the strut. Remove the tie rod from the steering knuckle. Unfasten the knuckle-attaching bolts from the bottom of the strut body. Remove the ball joint from the knuckle-attaching bolt and the lower control arm.

      Remove strut shafts using a Torx bit and a strut rod remover. Loosen the strut mount bolts and remove the strut mount. Disengage the jounce bumper retainer. Use a strut extension rod tool to constrict the shaft. Remove the jounce bumper and take off the strut cartridge. The entire strut assembly is off the vehicle.

      Mount the strut cartridge using a strut cap bolt wrench. Install the jounce bumper and jounce bumper retainer. Lubricate the strut mount bushing with a penetrating fluid. Attach the strut mount. You may need the strut extension rod to complete the task. Tighten the strut shaft bolt. Attach the strut mount cover by fastening the cover plate bolts. Reinstall the ball joint, tie rod, wheel and brake assembly by reversing Step 2 and Step 3.

  • Be sure to have the proper utensils to complete the job. Replacing the proper tools with ones that are not equipped to do the job may become a hindrance and could even be hazardous. Have the vehicle owner's manual nearby.

  • Always take safety precautions when working on a vehicle. Never consume alcoholic beverages while working on a vehicle. Refrain from smoking cigarettes while working near an engine. Loose clothing is discouraged; for instance, never wear a necktie when working on your vehicle.
