Instructions

  1. Repairing a Bathtub Diverter

    • 1

Locate the holding screw on the underside of the diverter. It will usually require an Allen wrench. If there is no holding screw, the spout should screw off by grasping it firmly and turning to the left.

    • 2

Loosen the holding screw with the Allen wrench with several turns. It is not necessary to remove the screw.

    • 3

Firmly grasp the bathtub spout and pull with a slight twisting motion toward you. If it does not pull straight off, it may be required to unscrew to the left.

    • 4

Locate and replace the rubber washer inside the spout. This will prevent any leaks.

    • 5

Locate the diverter mechanism and lubricate with the proper oil. This will ensure full functionality of the diverter and spout.

    • 6

Reinstall the tub spout in the reverse order. Test to ensure it is working properly.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is not necessary to turn the water off to the house. If your repair is more serious, you can purchase a Universal Tub Spout With Diverter Kit from your local home center and replace the entire spout.

  • Do not turn the tub faucet on while the diverter is removed. This will cause water to shoot out of the exposed pipe. Ensure the holding screw is tight, but do not over-tighten.
