How to Check if Xbox Friends Are Online

One of the best things about being an Xbox 360 owner is the ability to play with your friends. However, in order to play with your gaming buddies, you'll need to find out whether they are online and using the service. Checking up on your Xbox Live friends is very easy, and you can do it with or without the Xbox.

Things You'll Need

  • Xbox Live subscription service

Checking on Your Xbox 360

  • Power on your Xbox and sign into your Xbox Live account. If you do not have an Xbox Live Gold subscription, you will need to purchase one in order to view friend activity on Xbox Live.

  • Scroll up on your dashboard until you see the "friends" tab. Then scroll left and right to view your list of friends.

  • If a friend is online, you will see their avatar with their eyes open and moving around. You will also see a small game or dashboard icon indicating what they are doing. If your friend is not online, their avatar will appear to be sleeping.

Checking Using Your Computer

  • Go to the official Xbox 360 website (see Resource section for a link) and log in using the email address associated with your Gamertag and your password at the top of the page. You will be redirected to your online dashboard.

  • Click on your Gamertag, which now appears at the top of the page. On the new page, find the gray "friends" box.

  • At the bottom of the box, click on the link that says "view friends." You will now be able to see all of your Xbox friends, their online status and their most recent activity.

Tips & Warnings

  • You do not need an Xbox Live Gold account to view your friend's online status using the Xbox website.
