How To Make Fabric Paper

Paper making as an art form is easy to do at home with supplies you most likely already have on hand. If you are looking for an interesting paper that is sturdy for use in other projects such as scrapbooking and card making, make fabric paper instead of using traditional paper. Fabric paper is a layer of fabric that is coated with glue and other embellishments. It is sturdy, attractive and can even be written on like traditional paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a piece of plastic, such as a trash bag, over your work surface. This will protect the area as well as make it easy to peel off your paper when you are done.

    • 2

Combine 1 part white school glue with 1.5 parts water in a glass jar. Mix thoroughly with your brush.

    • 3

Lay a piece of muslin fabric onto the plastic-covered work surface and smooth any wrinkles out with your hand. The muslin can be cut to any size desired, but sizes under 11 by 17 inches are easier to work with until you master the process.

    • 4

Paint a thick layer of glue onto the muslin with a 1- to 2-inch wide foam brush. Cover the muslin entirely.

    • 5

Coat any embellishments you want to add to your paper with the glue mixture. Dried flowers, ribbon, torn pieces of paper and thread are a few ideas. Press the embellishments onto the muslin with your fingertips.

    • 6

Place a sheet of white tissue paper the same size as your muslin on top. Carefully smooth out any air bubbles with your fingertips. Start in the middle of the paper and smooth outward.

    • 7

Paint another layer of glue onto the top of the tissue paper. Keep the brush covered generously in glue at all times to avoid tearing the tissue.

    • 8

Allow the paper to completely dry for 24 to 48 hours. Peel it off the plastic sheet or trash bag carefully. You can now use your paper.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the tissue paper tears while gluing or smoothing, cut a small piece of tissue to patch the tear. Use a jar with a lid so you can save your unused glue mixture for future projects.
