Clean a Gas Range

Gas ranges cost less than electric ranges to operate, but they require a little more care when cleaning. Improper cleaning can lead to inefficient use and higher gas bills. If food splatter blocks the holes in the burner assembly, the flame will not burn properly. Whether you need light cleaning or heavy duty scrubbing, follow the steps below to clean a gas range. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. How to Clean a Gas Range

    • 1

Choose a cleaning solution. Dish soap, water, and a soft cloth should be all that is needed for surface cleaning. Many store-bought cleansers and abrasives can cause discolorations or leave scratches. Other homemade cleaning solutions include: rubbing alcohol and household ammonia diluted with water in a 1:1 ratio, baking soda and water in a 3:2 ratio, or non-gel toothpaste.

    • 2

Power down and cool off. Before cleaning, make sure all controls are off and the cook top and grates are completely cooled.

    • 3

Remove the grates and clean. Soak the removable grates in warm soapy water. Scrub with a cloth or paper towel. Let dry completely before returning the grates to the stove top.

    • 4

Remove and clean the control knobs. Pull off the knobs and wash in warm, soapy water. Replace them only after they are completely dry and turn each one to ensure proper placement.

    • 5

Attack stubborn food stains. For cooked-on food, use a razor blade, wooden scraper or rounded knife to scrape off the food. Avoid scratching or chipping the surface. Apply a safe commercial cleaner, like Bon Ami with pumice, to provide mildly abrasive cleaning power. Also consider using a non-gel toothpaste for cooked-on stains.

    • 6

Clean the burner assembly. There are small openings in the burner allowing the gas to escape when cooking. Clean these holes with a paper clip, fine wire or straight pin. Don't use anything that can break and leave the holes blocked. A soft-bristle toothbrush may be used for mild scrubbing action. Rinse clean with water and a soft cloth.

    • 7

Clean the surface. Apply your cleaning solution from step one with a paper towel or a microfiber cloth. Do not use an old dishcloth or soiled sponge to wipe the top as it may leave a film that will cause discoloration when the stove becomes hot. Rinse thoroughly and towel dry.

Clean other components. Wipe clocks and display areas with a damp cloth and dry promptly to avoid streaks.

Tips & Warnings
