How to Install Floor Registers

Installing floor registers (the air vents found on floors) is a simple process that can improve your home décor and give you complete control of the room's air flow. These days, floor registers come in hundreds of styles and a wide variety of materials, including brass, wood, aluminum and plastic. Replacing old, outdated metal registers is a worthwhile upgrade to any house. It takes very little time and money to complete this weekend project.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Screwdriver
  • Remove the old floor register. Use a screwdriver to remove the four corner screws that hold the register in place.

  • Measure the size of the vent opening in the floor with a measuring tape. This measurement should be one of several standard measurements used in home construction.

  • Order or purchase new floor registers based on your measurements (see Resources). In the meantime, do not leave the vent opening uncovered. Screw on the old registers until the new ones arrive.

  • Install the new floor registers. Remove the old floor registers (Step 1), and screw the new registers to the floor.
