How to Replace an RCA Jack on the Technics 1200

The venerable Technics 1200 turntable has been a staple of the audiophile community and DJs for many years. The 1200 sports a stable, reliable design and provides excellent audio performance. The output of the turntable is sent to an amplifier or receiver via two male RCA plugs connected to wires hardwired to the turntable. In the event the plugs have somehow become damaged, it's possible to remove the damaged plugs and replace them with new RCA plugs.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Wire cutters/strippers
    • soldering iron
    • rosin-core solder
      • 1

Cut off the damaged RCA plug. Cut the wire closely to the plug so that you don't lose an excessive amount of length in your turntable's cable.

      • 2

Strip the outer insulation of the cable to expose the two inner leads. Separate the leads, then strip the insulation from them so that each lead has 3/8 to 1/2 inch of bare wire exposed.

Unscrew the jacket (shell) from your RCA plug, and slip the jacket over the cable, so that the end with the threads is facing toward the stripped ends of the wire.

Hold the positive lead (colored red) against the center tab on the back side of the RCA plug. Place the soldering iron against the junction until it heats. Apply solder and let it flow into the joint. Remove the soldering iron and let the joint cool.

Repeat Step 4, using the negative lead and the outer tab of the RCA plug.

      • 6

Slide the jacket over the joints and screw it tightly onto the RCA plug. The new plug is ready to go.
