Instructions

  1. Use the Plunger

    • 1

Remove any stopper or strainer that may already be in the sink. If there is an overflow opening in the sink, plug it up with a piece of cloth. You don't want any extra air flow when using the plunger.

    • 2

Run just enough water in the sink to completely cover the rubber cup of the plunger. Then, place the cup of the plunger over the drain, tilting the cup slightly to get rid of any trapped air within the pipe.

    • 3

Pump the plunger up and down. Do this up to 10 times. This will cause the water trapped within the drain to surge. With the water surging, it should cause any blockage within the drain to break up and disperse.

    • 4

At the last stroke, abruptly tug the plunger out of the water. This final motion should cause the water to rush out.

    Work the Trap

    • 5

When you look underneath your sink, you should see an "S" shaped section of pipe. This is known as the gooseneck "trap." Place a bucket beneath this gooseneck trap.

    • 6

On the underside of the trap is a clean-out plug. Using a wrench, unscrew this plug from the bottom of the trap and drain any trapped water out.

    • 7

Using either a gloved hand or a bent wire hanger, clear out the stoppage. Then simply replace the plug.

Tips & Warnings

  • If using the plunger doesn't initially work, keep trying. A stubborn clog may take some working on, but many times you should be able to loosen it with a plunger. If there is still blockage after trying these steps, you may need to use a snake or find the blockage in the main drainage pipe. It's best to call a professional plumber if this is the case.
