How to Sew a Caveman Costume

Show your wild side by dressing up as a caveman. The costume is unisex, making it appropriate for a man or a woman. Consider making matching outfits for a couple. If desired, the female version could be cut to be a little shorter or more revealing. The main part of the outfit is sewn from fake fur. Any color or animal skin pattern could be used, but a brown, shaggy, fur fabric creates the most primitive look, as it resembles a mammoth.

Things You'll Need

  • Long, baggy T-shirt for pattern
  • 2 to 2 1/2 yards fake fur fabric
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Safety pins
  • Chicken wire
  • White glue
  • Water

Instructions

    • 1

Fold a 2-yard piece of fur in half to create two 1-yard pieces of fabric, doubled. Lay fabric on a cutting surface. Place the long, baggy T-shirt over the fur with the shoulders of the T-shirt at the top fold of the fur fabric. Cut around the neck, sides and sleeves of the T-shirt, through both layers of fur. Do not cut the shoulders or the bottom. The bottom edge of the fur is the bottom of the costume. If you want your costume longer than 36 inches from shoulder to bottom edge, use 2 1/2 yards of fabric and fold in half to create a 45-inch length.

    • 2

Remove the T-shirt. On the fur, cut out a larger neck opening and cut off the sleeves. You should now have a sleeveless tunic. With right sides together, sew the side seams from the bottom edge to the armholes. Turn right side out. Shape bottom, neck and armhole edges in a jagged, zigzag cut.

    • 3

From scrap fur fabric, cut 2-inch wide strips long enough to wrap around your ankles, plus 2 inches. When ready to wear the costume, go barefoot and pin the strips of fabric around your ankles.

    • 4

Make a club from chicken wire and papier-mache. Cut an approximately 2-foot-by-1-foot piece of chicken wire. Roll it into a tube shape. Squeeze the lower part of the tube together to make a handle. Leave the upper part of the tube wide, but bend in the top end of the tube to create a rounded top. Cover the entire chicken wire form in newspaper strips that have been dipped into a mixture of three parts glue to one part water. Place the strips of glue all around the chicken wire form, overlapping edges. Allow to dry. Paint the club brown.

Tips & Warnings

  • After sewing fur fabric, hide the seams by using a pin to pull out pieces of fur that are stuck under the thread.
