Most homes built before the 1970s contain cast-iron plumbing pipes, which can present a problem for home owners when they are doing plumbing repairs or adding a plumbing line. Fortunately, thanks to a rubber boot, it is possible to easily tie PVC into cast iron, making home plumbing repairs an easy thing to do. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Use a cast-iron pipe cutter to cut the cast-iron pipe where needed to make the connection to the incoming PVC pipe.
-
2
Run the PVC pipe as needed, terminating the end that is to be connected to the cast iron about 1/2 inches from the end of the cast iron pipe. Note that the two pipes need to be the same diameter, so if they are different sizes, utilize a PVC reducer/enlarger fitting on the PVC pipe to make it the proper size.

3
Slide the rubber boot over the PVC pipe and place the mouth of the PVC against the mouth of the cast-iron pipe. Slide the boot so that it covers both ends of pipe equally.
-
4
Tighten the four hose clamps on the boot with a standard screwdriver, applying as much pressure as possible.
-
5
Turn on the water to the line and check for leaks. If water leaks from the connection, tighten the hose clamps.
