Cut as many tiles as the number of shelves you desire at either a diagonal across the center of the tile or arced out from the diagonal through the center. One tile per shelf is strong enough, though it may not seem so. The shelf's stability comes from being sandwiched between the row of tile above and below.

Tile the shower until you reach the height desired for your first shelf.

Install the tile you intend to use for a shelf straight out from the corner, instead of flat against the wall (in the space where the grout line would go). The lower and upper tile courses will hold the tile in place.

Continue tiling your shower. Add as many shelves as you wish this way, using rows of tiles as spacers between your shelves.

Grout around the shelves as you would with any other tile.
