How to Use a Nib Pen
A nib pen is another way to describe a dip pen. These pens were usually made of wood and contained the nib along with the capillary channels. Nib pens were generally used before the invention of fountain pens. Today they are perfect for cartooning or line art. Waterproof ink is one advantage to using the nib pen.

1
Load ink into the nib pen by using a dropper. This is more accurate and less messy than dipping the nib into a bottle of ink. To load into a dropper, simply add a few drips into the dropper and then use the dropper to put the drops directly into the nib of the pen.

2
Use a smooth, lint-free paper when using the nib pen. Rough paper can cause the nib to catch, which will cause blots of ink to come out. Using smooth paper will also protect the nib.

3
Don't use the nib pen as you would use a ballpoint pen, because the ink will rush out and blob the paper.
-
4
Hold the nib pen at a flatter angle than you would with a ballpoint pen. Use the thumb and middle fingers along the sides of the nib pen, keeping the index finger on top. This will give the pen a lower angle to write properly.
-
5
Pull the nib pen across the paper gently. If the nib is pushed, ink can come out, causing a mess. The nib pen must be treated gently. The key to using a nib pen is practice!
-
6
Use an extremely light touch when using the nib pen. Ink will usually flow as soon as you touch pen to paper. If the nib is clogged, you are probably holding the pen wrong.
-
7
Use solid strokes instead of pushing the pen to work. Make your strokes slow and easy. Keep the pen moving, since stopping suddenly can cause extra ink to rush out. If you stop the nib in one spot of the paper, there will probably be more ink in that one spot.
-
8
Clean the nib when you want to switch ink colors. To do this, flush the nib with clean water. Let the water flow through the nib until no more ink flows through. Air-dry completely before using.
-
9
Use water to clean the nib pen after each use. Use soap and water for harder-to-clean pens. Dry after every cleaning.
