How to Size Air Ducts
For efficiency, tightness and overall fit and finish, sizing your air ducts before adding piping is an absolute necessity. If you are having the installation done professionally, make sure that the installers sized the air ducts ahead of time. If they did not or charge extra for this service, you can do it yourself and provide the information. If you are installing your own piping, just do the sizing as part of the overall process. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Remove the ducting if necessary. If you have an air duct set up already, remove a piece of ducting. These pieces are generally held in by 2 or 3 screws on the ends, so taking your screwdriver, turn the screws in a counter clockwise direction, and pull the pipe off. Once the end pipe is off lay it down on the floor or a table with an open end up.

2
Lay your tape measure across the opening of the air duct piece of pipe. It should be across the center of the circle that the opening of the pipe makes so that you are taking the measurement of the diameter of the opening of the pipe.

3
Round off your measurement. Your measurement will be a whole even number. 4-inch, 6-inch and 8-inch air duct pipes are common. Since your measurement has to come out to an even number, even if your measurement is ¼ or ½ inch off round it to the closest even number. That number will be the size of your air duct, and you can use the number to determine how to handle the piping from that point forward.
