Homemade Tutu

Making your daughter's dance costume can be a fun and easy job that the two of you can work on together. You might find the decorative items you need around the house, so your costs will be far lower than what you would pay for a costume at a dance specialty store. Regardless of your budget, however, creating your daughter's costume makes it special and unique.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • Basic leotard or ruffle-sleeve shirt
  • 2 yards of tulle fabric (add more yardage for a fluffier tutu)
  • Elastic (enough to fit comfortably around your child's waist)
  • Glitter
  • Sequins
  • Rhinestones
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Tights or pantyhose
  • Hair accessories
  • Dance shoes

Instructions

  1. Make Your Child's Dance Costume

    • 1

First things first: Design the costume. Determine how you and your daughter want the costume to look, sketch it, then decide what type of materials and colors will work best.

    • 2

Gather or purchase the necessary items and get to work. You will need a foundation piece, such as a basic leotard or a ruffle-sleeve shirt.

    • 3

Create an elastic band that comfortably encircles your child's waist; sew the ends of the elastic together. Cut the tulle in 4-inch-wide strips. Lap each strip over the elastic band and tie with a knot at the band, fluffing the fabric on either side of the elastic. Repeat until all the strips are attached to the band, creating the tutu. Pair the tutu with the leotard or ruffly shirt for the basic costume.

    • 4

Accessorize the dance costume. This type of apparel must shine, so hot-glue or sew glitter, rhinestones or sequins to the top and sleeves. Also, rim the neckline with the sparkle of your choice. Add tights or pantyhose.

    • 5

Select dance shoes that fit the occasion, for example, tap or ballet style. Top off the costume with age-appropriate makeup and hair accessories, such as glittery barrettes or a glitzy pony-tail holder.
