The ignition switch in your Honda Accord Coupe is designed to complete the electrical circuit between the vehicle battery and the starter. The Honda Accord has had some reports of electrical components melting within the switch, requiring the ignition switch to be replaced. You can replace the switch on your Honda Accord Coupe yourself in just a couple of hours with a more reliable switch, and be able to save the money you would pay out in labor costs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Detach the negative battery cable from the battery of your Honda Accord Coupe and move the cable out of the way, being careful not to touch the cable to any metal parts of the engine.

  2. Step 2

Set the ignition switch to the "0" or locked position to prevent any electrical discharge as you work with the wiring. Take the key out of the ignition switch. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws from the lower dashboard cover and set the dashboard cover out of the way.

  3. Step 3

Unfasten the cover plate on the bottom side of the steering column with a screwdriver and set the plate aside. Locate the fusebox underneath the dashboard, next to the drivers' door, and find the electrical switch harness that runs to the ignition switch.

  4. Step 4

Lift the tab on the harness connector with a screwdriver and pull the electrical wires apart so that the ignition switch wiring is loose from the fusebox. Locate the two bolt heads on the ignition switch and place a center punch on one of the bolts at a slight angle so that you can undo the bolt counterclockwise. Tap on the center punch with a hammer to get the bolt moving counterclockwise until you can remove it by hand. Repeat this process for the other bolt.

  5. Step 5

Slide the ignition switch out of the socket and thread the electrical wiring out of the steering column. Pay attention to how the wiring runs through the column, so you will be able to replace it the same way. Thread the new wiring into the steering column and down to the fusebox. Leave the wiring disconnected for now.

  6. Step 6

Set the new ignition switch in place and pull out any slack in the wiring by pulling it down through the steering column to the fusebox. Replace the pins in the sides of the ignition switch by screwing them back into place and then locking them by tapping the bolts with a center punch and hammer, clockwise.

  7. Step 7

Connect the electrical wiring to the harness on the fusebox. Reattach the cover plate to the bottom of the steering column. Position the lower dashboard back in place and secure with screws. Attach the negative battery cable to the Honda Accord battery and test the ignition switch by turning it on. Once you have tested the switch, turn it to the "off" position.
