Repair Washing Machine Agitator

A washing machine agitator is an integral part of the wash cycle. It moves the clothes around to wash them thoroughly and assists in the spin cycle function. Over time, you might notice your washing machine agitator isn't working as well as it should. If this is the case, there are a few minor repairs you can attempt to make sure it is working properly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Be sure the washing machine is unplugged. Remove the hoses that connect to the back of the washing machine. Drain the hoses into a bucket if they still have water in them.

    • 2

Open the washing machine and take the top off the agitator. It should pop off easily. You'll notice a screw that holds the agitator in place. Tighten it completely to make sure the agitator is secure.

    • 3

Remove the back panel of the washing machine. Locate the belt that runs the agitator (it will be the only belt visible). Check for signs of wear, such as cracking or splitting. If this is the case, replace the belt. (You might want to contact a licensed repairman to replace it.) If it is not visibly cracked, use your fingers to press on the belt to test its slack. If it moves more than 3/4 of an inch, tighten the belt using the screws on either side.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check to see if your washer is still under warranty before completing any repairs. Some repairs that are done without the supervision of a licensed repairman can void your warranty.
