How to Replace Toyota Corolla License Plate Light Bulb

by Mike Vasick

The Corolla has been a part of Toyota's lineup since 1968; it has had one of the longest runs of any car model. Before replacing a failed license plate bulb, check the fuse. Be careful of sharp edges in the trunk under the trim panel.

Step 1

Open the trunk and locate the clips that hold the interior trim panel in place. Remove the clips by turning the center of a clip with the Phillips screwdriver a quarter turn, and using the trim tool to pop the clip out. Set the trim panel aside.

Step 2

Disconnect the license plate light electric connector. Use the small flat-head screwdriver to push the claw in and release the assembly.

Step 3

Turn the bulb socket a quarter turn counterclockwise and remove it from the assembly. Pull the bulb straight out of the socket and install the new bulb. Put the socket back into the assembly and turn it a quarter turn clockwise to lock it into place.

Step 4

Install the light assembly back into the trunk by lining up the claw and pushing in until you hear it click into place. Plug in the electrical connector and install the interior trim panel. Push the clips into place, then push the center of the clips in to tighten them.
