Inspect the pool for cracks or leaks. Scrub muck and algae off the sides and bottom of the pool with a pool brush. Skim the top of the water with a net to clear as much debris as possible. If the pool was emptied for the winter, climb in and inspect it. Contact a pool contractor for repairs before refilling. Refill the pool or replenish water that has evaporated over the winter.

Clean and inspect the electrical connections to the pump. Turn on and test filters and pumps. Clean filters and pumps and lubricate O-rings. Replace any filters that need replacing. Check the cement pad beneath the pump for leakage. Fix a filter leak early, before it’s a big and expense repair.

Allow the water to circulate for a day before adding a shock treatment to raise the chlorine level above 5 parts per million. Follow the directions on the shock treatment. Test water balance; adjust calcium, alkalinity and pH level to between 7.4 and 7.6.

Brush the steps and sides again. Test chemicals again in 12 to 24 hours and adjust as necessary.
