How To Install Drapery Rods

Straight drapery rods can clip into a standard bracket that's attached to the window frame or directly to the wall. Many people prefer to install drapery rods just outside and above the window frame so the edges of the curtain are concealed. Install drapery rods by driving screws directly into the stud, the 2-by-4 frames that run from floor to ceiling behind the drywall. When the window is not near a stud, install an anchor into the drywall for additional support. A universal anchor expands after it is installed to prevent the screw from pulling away.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Use a carpenter's rule to measure 2 inches outside and 4 inches above the window frame on each side where the drapery rod and curtains will be. Holding a bracket up to the wall, mark where the outside edges of the bracket will be, on both sides.

  2. Step 2

Drill holes for two anchors on each side of the window, based on the holes in the brackets. Use a drill bit that is smaller than the diameter of the anchor. Tap the anchor with a hammer until it is flush with the wall.

  3. Step 3

Install the brackets. Place the bracket over the anchor so the drill holes align with the anchor holes. Push a screw through a hole and tighten it with a screwdriver.

  4. Step 4

Clip the drapery rod in place. Hang the rod over the top so it catches the upper hook. It is easier to hook one side at a time. When the top is secure, gently push the bottom of the rod onto the lower hooks so it locks in place. (See Tips and Resources).

  5. Step 5

Place a carpenter's level over the drapery rod to ensure that the brackets are mounted evenly on both sides. If the rod is not level, remove the rod and brackets and repeat Steps 1 to 4.

  6. Step 6

Measure and mark the distance between the rods to install the center support. Divide the figure by two to find the center. Place a mark on the wall for the drill hole.

  7. Step 7

Mount the center support bracket with anchors. Remove the rod to access the wall, then drill the holes for the anchors. Align the center bracket with the anchor holes, then secure it to the wall by inserting and tightening a screw.

  8. Step 8

Thread the rings, hooks or curtain directly onto the drapery rod.

  9. Step 9

Return the drapery rod to the bracket.

Tips & Warnings
  • An assistant may be necessary to clip the rod in place and to ensure it is level. Check the rating on the anchor before you install drapery rods. Anchors are rated for the total weight they will support. It is better to be cautious and go with larger anchors or those with a higher rating.
  • Do not neglect to read the manufacturer's instructions for the anchors. Some anchors are designed for drywall, while others are designed for paneling.
