      Example of roof faces

Lay shingles through the valley. The National Roofing Contractors Association recommends that you begin laying your shingles on the edge of your lower roof face and work toward the valley. Use four 3/4-inch roofing nails on each shingle. Lay the shingles through the valley and at least 12 inches onto the other roof face. Press tightly in the valley to prevent bridging and do not use any nails within 6 inches of the center of the valley. Lay the shingles all the way up to the top of the ridge on the lower face. At this point, you will have covered the lower roof face and have shingles on the higher roof face only 12 inches across the valley.

Chalk a line to mark the center of the valley. This will serve as a guide for cutting the shingles that you will lay on the higher roof face.

    • 4

Move to the other roof face, which will be empty except for the 12 inches of shingles that cross the valley, and lay shingles from the edge opposite the valley moving toward the valley. When you get to the valley, you will cut the shingles along the chalk line. Remember not to use any nails within 6 inches of the valley center.

Apply roofing tar or cement to the underside of all of the cut shingles along the center of the valley. This will serve as a water barrier. You can purchase a caulk gun-style container from a home improvement store.
