How to Remove the Shift Key on a Dell Keyboard

Computer keyboards today are little more than plastic and a few inexpensive electronic components. In many cases the best way to repair a computer keyboard is to just buy a new one and replace the old one, especially if you spill something sticky (like soda) on the keyboard. But if you do drop something small in the keyboard and it drops down in-between the keys, you can remove the keys to retrieve the lost object.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the computer off and disconnect the keyboard. Whenever you are working with a computer and its parts, you should not have the computer running. It is also safer to disconnect any devices you are working on from the computer itself.

    • 2

Place the keyboard on a flat, clear surface. When working with the keyboard, you will need it to stay steady while you are working with the keys. Use a desk or table that is sturdy and solid.

    • 3

Carefully insert your screwdriver down the side of the Shift key. There is not a lot of room there, so do not force the screwdriver down. The keys are just made of molded plastic, so forcing them will break them. Aim for a corner of the key.

    • 4

Gently twist the screwdriver. This should apply upward pressure to the shift key. With enough gentle pressure, the key will pop off and come free from the keyboard.

    • 5

To re-install the key, just place it back in the hole where it was removed from and press down hard until the key clicks into place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful with the screwdriver, the keys are plastic and can break easily.
