How to Use a Roof Rack

A roof rack can be used to carry a canoe, luggage, bike and many other larger objects that do not fit inside your trunk. When you haul items on a roof rack, the primary objective is to make sure the items are secure and you can drive your vehicle safely.

Instructions

    • 1

Analyze the size of what you're putting on your roof rack. Measure the rack and compare those measurements with the size of the items you are hauling and decide whether they will fit. If you're taking more than one thing, you should decide what to put in the car and what to put on the rack. Figure out how to save the most space and avoid putting anything on the roof rack that you can fit into the car.

    • 2

Place your items on the roof rack. Try to get the biggest items on first so if you have to put other items in the car, you'll save space in the car. Secure each item so if you cannot secure any more items, you will only need to take down the last item.

    • 3

Latch one end of a roof-rack tie under one of the bars. Make sure it is secure. Throw the roof-rack tie over the items you are securing.

    • 4

Pull the roof-rack tie tight over the items and latch the roof-rack tie under the bar on the other side. Use three or four roof-rack ties to secure the items tightly in one direction.

    • 5

Secure the roof-rack ties going the other direction to make sure the items are doubly secure.

    • 6

Drive around the block a few times to make sure your items aren't going to fly off.
