How to Replace Washers in a Bathtub
If your bathtub faucet is leaking, the most common problem is a worn or damaged washer, which you need to replace. A rubber washer, when in good shape, will snugly fit against the faucet opening and prevent any leaks. However, as it wears out or forms holes, leaks are inevitable. 1
Turn off the water supply to your home. Most likely, you will be able to find the appropriate valve in your basement. Simple twist the valve until it is closed and the water is shut off.
-
2
Return to the tub that needs the washer replaced. Turn the faucet on to release any excess water.

3
Remove the faucet handles by popping off both the "hot" and "cold" labels in the middle of the knob. You should be able to use your screwdriver to pry these out. Set them to the side.
-
4
Take off the screws that are below the labels you just removed. Pull the handles completely off. This will expose the remaining faucet mechanism, one side of which will hold the washer you will soon replace.
-
5
Remove the washer fitting from the wall and locate the end with the rubber washer inside. Using your screwdriver, pop the washer out. If the washer is worn or damaged in anyway, it is ready to be replaced.
-
6
Push the new washer into the area where you just removed the old one. It should slide easily into place, but make sure it's snug. As long as the new washer is the same size as the old, you will not have any problems.

7
Reconnect your bathtub's faucet and turn the water back on in your home.
