Finding the right lamp to fit your style is not easy. Many lamps are very streamlined and look the same. For lamps that do have a one-of-a-kind look, they also have a price tag to go with it. Creating your own lamp using glass bottles is a great way to use your creativity and reuse materials.

Things You'll Need

  • Glass bottle(s)
  • Acrylic paint
  • Lamp wire kit
  • Glue
  • Drill
  • Glass-cutting bits
  • Wood base (optional)
  • Hanging hardware (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Draw out the design for your lamp. Pick out the type of glass bottle you want to use, consider if it is heavy enough to support a lampshade or not.

Apply a color coating to the bottle. To do this, mix some acrylic paint with water to dilute it. Pour the mixture into the glass bottle and shake it around until it evenly coats the entire bottle. Pour out the remaining paint into a throwaway container.

Drill a hole in the bottom part of the bottle on the side. This will allow the electrical cord to be placed inside the bottle and then be plugged into the wall.

    • 4

Weave the electrical cord from the lamp kit in through the drilled hole and up the glass bottle. Connect the electrical cord to the rest of the kit for the lamp that will hold the light bulb.

    • 5

Use the glue to attach the bottom of the lamp kit to the top of the glass bottle. Make sure it is a glue made for glass, such as epoxy resin. Allow to fully dry.

    • 6

Decide if the lamp will hang or sit on a surface. If it will hang, attach a metal hanging wire to the glass bottle. If it will sit on a surface, consider using a wood base to attach to the bottom of the glass bottle for additional support. The same glass glue can be used to attach the glass to the wood base.

      Multiple bottle lamp

Consider using multiple glass bottles around a light for the lamp instead of the light mounted on top of just one glass bottle. The glass, or sometimes even plastic, bottles are then the main decoration around the light kit.

      Oil lamp

Make an oil lamp as another option. Insert wood pieces, shells, and other various materials into the glass bottle. Then fill the bottle with oil. Place a wick into the oil and allow to soak. It can then be lit and used as a lamp.

Tips & Warnings

  • Play around with designs and ideas to see what works best for the area in which your lamp will be used.
