How to Install a Garage Door Keypad

Save

A garage door keypad is used as a way to open the garage without having to use a remote. Instead, the keypad is placed on the exterior of the garage, and you will need to enter a code to access the area. Most garage keypads are not difficult to install, and once installed you will only need to memorize the code to open and close your garage door.

Things You'll Need

  • Electric drill
  • Screwdriver
  • First, choose a location to mount the keypad and turn off power to the garage door opener. You will need to drill a pilot hole from the outside to the inside of the garage. You can use an electric drill; the hole should be ½ inch in size.

  • Then, run the cable attached to the keypad through the hole into the inside of the garage. Use the included screws and a screwdriver to mount the keypad on the outside.

  • Next, connect the control box of your garage door keypad to the push button terminal of your garage door opener. You will need to screw the wire into the terminal opening. To do this, most manufacturers will recommend that you use a low voltage wire. Depending on the model, you may need to use two low voltage wires and connect them to two different terminal outlets.

  • Finally, on the control box snap the keypad plug into place. You are going to want to find a spot within the garage to mount the control box with the included screws.

  • Lastly, insert the batteries into your keypad control box and turn back the power on to the garage door opener. You will then need to program the keypad with your selected code.

Tips & Warnings

  • The steps may vary depending on the model garage door keypad that you purchase. Contact your manufacturer for any additional assistance.
