How to Install a Toilet Handle

Installing a toilet handle is an easy task that anyone can do. There are no tools used to complete this job.       Lift the tank cover off of the toilet and set aside. Inside the tank there is a flapper chain connected to the end of the toilet handle lever. Disconnect the chain from the lever. You can allow the chain to rest at the bottom of the tank.

      Toilet Handle and Plastic Nut

      Remove the plastic nut from the back of the toilet handle. The plastic nut is located on the inside of the tank and is securing the handle in place. Completely unscrew the plastic nut by hand and slide it off the end of the lever.

      Pull out on the handle and the lever at the same time. The lever will come out of the back of the handle. Insert the new handle through the hole on the tank. While holding the handle to the tank insert the curved end of the lever into the back of the handle. From the inside of the tank slide the plastic nut onto the lever all the way to the tank.

      Tighten the plastic nut by hand enough to make sure that the handle is flush to the tank, but not so tight that the handle will not move. Reconnect the flapper chain to the end of the lever.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some handles and levers do not come apart. If this is the case with your handle, you can slide the lever and the handle out of the tank in one piece.
