The phrase "Teen Drama" brings to mind a decade of high school students rushing home to watch Beverly Hills, 90210 and Dawson's Creek. With these classics, the 1990s became a decade that paved the way for an entire new genre of television. But, the Teen Drama isn't just for teenagers anymore. We know that these shows are filled with angst and melodramatic situations, but that doesn't mean you can't appreciate them at any age.
With these instructions in hand, adolescents to adults can appreciate the angst driven battlegrounds of the Teen Drama.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A sense of humor
  • Empathy
  • A place to rent DVDs
  1. Step 1

The first step is to locate either a store or an online venue that rents Teen Dramas. While some local movie stores will have several available, one will most likely have a wider selection from places such as Netflix or Blockbuster online.

  2. Step 2

Decide on if you want to watch your Teen Drama with friends or by yourself. Watching by yourself gives your viewing a more quiet and introspective feeling as there is no one around with which to share your commentary. Watching with friends is often a more interactive experience. If you choose the latter, gather friends who are willing to fully appreciate the emotional roller coaster that will ensue. You will want people who are both good at mocking and good at empathizing-- too much of one or the other and the balance required for enjoyment is off.

  3. Step 3

Gather the people (or yourself) into a darkened room and play the first episode. It will often take several episodes before you are fully attached to characters. You must remember that your show stayed on the air for so long because it stretched issues far longer than they ever go in real life. Love triangles are almost never solved in the first, second, or third seasons. Don't think they will be, it will only frustrate you. Do not be put off by the drama. Instead, follow the remaining steps for maximum viewing pleasure.

  4. Step 4

Pick a favorite main character. This will help you immediately attach yourself to the story at hand. Once you have identified someone to follow, you will be more likely to care what is happening to them. There will undoubtedly be characters you dislike, just as there is in life, but you have to have unwavering dedication to the characters you do like.

  5. Step 5

Try to associate each theme to something you have experienced in your life. Instead of thinking of the story arc as "dramatic," think of it as an exaggeration of an event from your past or present. Try to see the real emotion within the plot. If you can connect to the story on an emotional level, you will enjoy it more.

  6. Step 6

Do not be afraid to laugh. Some moments are meant for lightheartedness, and others are just easy to mock. Occasional laughing and mocking at exaggerated situations, especially if viewing with friends, allows you to appreciate the moments with real emotion more.

  7. Step 7

Remember that in a teen drama, the characters are teens. This is very important. Reflect on your teen years, whether they are occurring or have long since passed. You may realize that although amplified, what the teens are experiencing is close to reality. Being a teenager is a very dramatic period, whether you showed it or not, it rarely passed with no inner or outer turmoil.

  8. Step 8

Finally, don't forget that each Teen Drama usually focuses on a group of teens which is why there is so much happening. When you begin to realize that each character has a separate plot line, you will realize that there isn't nearly as much melodrama as you thought. When you are able to separate each story then it becomes much more organized and manageable.

  9. Step 9

With these ideas in mind, you will be able to fully enjoy any Teen Drama. The key is to appreciate the medium for what it is, commit fully to your favorite characters, and be unafraid to look for the real emotions beneath the plot. Watching a Teen Drama is a fun and entertaining way to reflect and laugh about your teen years. Enjoy!
