How to Remove the Impeller on a Maytag Dishwasher

The wash impeller is a circular black disc with a small nipple on the bottom that pushes water up into the wash arms during the wash cycle. On Maytag dishwashers, the impeller is part of the wash motor assembly. If your dishwasher starts making strange noises or doesn't drain well, you may be able to solve the problem by disassembling the wash motor assembly to clean out any foreign matter that has gotten stuck there. Reference the diagram while following the steps below to remove the impeller from your dishwasher.

• Screwdriver
• Torx screwdriver

1. Unplug the dishwasher. Remove the racks, then spread the clips that hold the manifold, which is the long tube that runs inside the dishwasher along the back and top.

2. Pull the top of the manifold forward while pushing the bottom back until it snaps out. Remove it from the dishwasher.

3. Loosen the wash arm hub and pivot, then remove the spray arm. Remove the three Torx screws from the filter guard, then remove the guard.

4. Pick up the wash motor assembly from the bottom of the dishwasher and disconnect the wiring harness from the motor. Remove the assembly from the dishwasher.

5. Remove the six Torx screws around the discharge housing to remove it, then locate the access hole on the bottom of the motor and hold a screwdriver in there to stop the motor from rotating while you remove the Torx screw that holds the wash impeller. Remove the impeller.
