How to Use a Happy Bottom Pool Pad

Whether you are about to set up a new pool, or replace the liner in your existing pool, this is the time to add some additional cushioning to go under that liner. The product to use is Happy Bottom Pool Pad. It is a material made of high-density polyethylene foam approximately ¼-inch thick. It will provide benefits such as reducing the risk of liner puncture from below, act as a vapor barrier keeping water from corroding the bottom rail of the pool and provide a smooth, flat surface with fewer indentations. The flatter the bottom, the less likely algae will form on it due to the more efficient vacuuming potential it provides. Does this Spark an idea?

The Happy Bottom Pool Pad comes in rolls that are ¼-inch thick by 48-inches wide and 150-feet long. Distributors sell these in package form by pool size. The manufacturer also recommends that consumers use two of their other products in conjunction with the Happy Bottom Pool Pad. The first product is called Sure Seam Tape to join the sections of pool padding together and the second is pool cove which goes around the inside perimeter of the pool by attaching to the bottom rail. Both of these products work well, as does the Happy Bottom Poll Pad itself.

For a new pool installation, excavate the site as per the pool manufacturer's directions. Once all of the rocks, grass, roots, burrowing animals and insects have been resolved and the site is perfectly level, proceed with the process. It is each pool owner's choice to decide if he or she wants to put black plastic down first as a primary weed barrier followed by a 4-inch cushion of masonry sand.

Begin by cutting the pool pad into sections that are 2 feet longer than the diameter of the pool. Place the pool pads next to each other on a large clean surface like a garage floor or perhaps a driveway or parking area. Tape the seams together making sure to keep the pieces tightly against each other with no spacing between them. Once you tape the entire pad together on one side only, sweep off any debris, flip it over and center it on the pool site. Never overlap the pieces because they must be perfectly flat. Assemble the pool and before liner placement secure pool cove to the bottom rail. When you assemble the pool, use a utility knife to trim any excess pool pad extending outside of the pool.

For a liner replacement job, prepare the ground as described above if all components are not already in place. If pool cove is already in use, remove it until you position the new pool pad. Cut the first piece long enough to fit the full length of the pool, place it and trim off the edge to fit the contour of the pool. Cut the second piece so that it fits tightly next to the first piece, trim the excess and, with both pieces forming a tight fit next to each other, tape the seam. Continue cutting, trimming and taping until the pad covers the entire inside floor of the pool. Install new or re-install the existing pool cove, which will cover the edges of the trimmed pool pad all around the perimeter. Place the new liner in the pool and install per manufacturer's instructions.
