Fitted bed sheets are very easy to make. So easy that someone with novice-level sewing skills could complete this project in a short amount of time. One reason to think about making your own fitted bed sheets is that when you make your own sheets you can use your choice of fabric. Imagine snuggling down into a bed during the winter that has fitted bed sheets made from fleece. Fleece is warm and soft and would make a wonderful fitted bed sheet. Another added benefit of using fleece for making your own fitted bed sheet is that the raw edges of fleece do not need to be finished. This makes working with fleece even faster and easier!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fleece (amount determined by bed size)
  • Sewing machine
  • Sewing notions (thread, pins, scissors, etc.)
  • Tape measure
  • Fabric pen
  1. Step 1

Measure the width, length, and depth of your mattress.

To figure the amount of fleece necessary, complete the following computation:

Width: Width plus (depth times two) plus 16
Length: Length plus (depth times two) plus 16

  2. Step 2

Purchase your fleece in the amount figured in step 1.

  3. Step 3

Lay out your fleece on a flat surface (the floor is fine). Add the depth measurement plus 8 and measure this amount in from each corner both vertically and horizontally. Draw lines to the point where these two points intersect to form a square shape in each corner. Cut along these lines.

  4. Step 4

Place the cut corner edges together with right sides facing and sew together with a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

  5. Step 5

Cut four 24-inch lengths of elastic. Fold each piece in half and place a small mark at the middle point.

  6. Step 6

Place the elastic on the wrong side of the fleece with the edge aligned with the bottom edge. Position the middle point at the seam sewed in step 4. Pin the elastic to secure.

  7. Step 7

Sew the elastic to the fleece with a zigzag stitch starting from the middle point and sewing out to each end. Stretch the elastic as necessary to reach the fleece edge. Repeat with the three remaining corners.
