The oxygen sensor is the device inside your engine compartment that tells your onboard computer how much fuel to mix with the air that is available to it in the intake manifold. The oxygen sensor serves several purposes. However, its main purpose is to maintain gas mileage by making micro adjustments to the air-fuel mixture based on the burnt fuel-to-air ratio in the exhaust fumes coming out of the exhaust manifold. The Infiniti J30 has a single oxygen sensor located on the exhaust manifold in the engine compartment. Eventually, oxygen sensors will go bad or break, and they will need to be replaced or else your car will not run properly. Oxygen sensors are easy to replace, and you can change the one in your Infiniti J30 in just a few simple steps.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Pop the hood of your car and prop the hood with the prop rod. You will need plenty of room to work as the oxygen sensor is near the back bottom of the engine compartment. Locate the sensor on top of your engine's exhaust manifold.

  2. Step 2

Pull on the wire on top of the sensor, disconnect it and lay it aside. Slide the oxygen sensor wrench over the old oxygen sensor, attach the ratchet and then turn counterclockwise. Unscrew the oxygen sensor and remove it. Slide the new oxygen sensor in its place.

  3. Step 3

Finger tighten the new oxygen sensor and then tighten it down completely using the oxygen sensor wrench and the ratchet. Slide the wire back onto the top electrode of the oxygen sensor, close and latch the hood. Start the car up and see how it idles.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pull the wiring off at the base of the wire (i.e., don't pull on the wire itself) or else it could easily break or fray the connection.
  • Make sure to wait at least 30 to 60 minutes after having run the car to attempt this installation as the exhaust manifold will be hot.
