How to Splice Wiring for Light Fixtures

Into every wire a splice must fall. Knowing the right way to make a splice is essential for wiring a light fixture, whether the splice is at the light fixture, the light switch, or somewhere in between. Use simple tools and the right materials, and you'll have a splice you can be proud of in no time.

  • Turn the power off to the circuits you'll be working on, preferably at the breaker box. Post a note or sign to warn people not to turn the power on.

  • Strip the insulation off of the wires to be joined so that 3/8 to 1/2 inch of bare wire is visible.

  • Hold the wires together, parallel, so that the bare wires are touching. Insert the wires into your wire nut, and twist the connector until it feels tight. Give the wires a gentle tug to be sure that the wires are securely fastened in the wire nut.

  • Take a piece of electrical tape and wrap the base of the wire nut and the wires going into the wire nut for an extra measure of insulation and security.
